McHale Storm: Maxim Sits Down With the Star of the New Sitcom "Community"
Maxim Staff
Of all the sitcoms out there, what made you want to get involved in this one?
It doesn’t sound like everything else. I mean, I don’t have that many friends who are wandering around like, "Why can't I figure out how to love someone?"
So you read the script and dug it?
It felt like something I could pull off. Like my character, I am often a jerk myself. Plus, the thing made me laugh out loud.
Community has a real Breakfast Club vibe. One of the characters even quotes the "It was a banner f'in year at the old Bender house" speech in the pilot.
I'm glad the scene's in there, even though some young people may not recognize it. The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off occupied about thirty percent of my movie watching as a kid.
Are you still going to do The Soup?
Yup, I'll be like Ryan Seacrest with my multiple jobs. I'm Seacrestian! I mean, if that guy can have 12 jobs, I can have two.
Will Community be as full of pop culture references as The Soup?
Yeah, but I hope we can avoid talking too much about Spencer and Heidi. I don't know if it will be possible, because I don’t think America can survive without them.
How is working with Chevy Chase?
He's like Nolan Ryan. He's older than everyone, but he can throw the ball harder. There are times where I'll just look over at him and be like, "Holy shit! You're Chevy Chase!" But he's great, and I can quote Vacation and Caddyshack back to him in a heartbeat.
Did he know who you were?
No. he had no idea.
